AccessAsia, the first clearinghouse to track the expertise and current research of specialists on policy-related issues in Asia, was established by The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) in 1990. The project currently tracks over 3,000 leading academic, government, and private-sector specialists on Asia, making it the only resource of its kind. AccessAsia makes its findings available at no charge in an online searchable database.

In cooperation with the International House of Japan and with the support of the Center for Global Partnership (CGP) of the Japan Foundation, the Microsoft Corporation, the Freeman Foundation, and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, NBR has joined with other major research and exchange institutions throughout Asia, North America, and Europe to form the AccessAsia Global Consortium. Consortium members track policy-relevant Asia specialists and their current research worldwide and submit this data to NBR. The result is a remarkable database that aims at providing a comprehensive, worldwide source for expertise on contemporary Asia.

The AccessAsia Global Consortium Vision Statement

The need for expertise and research on contemporary Asian-Pacific affairs has expanded enormously in recent years as a consequence of major international developments including the end of the Cold War, new security considerations, rapid economic growth, globalization of information and capital, and new multilateral institutions such as APEC. To address the international need for understanding these developments, leading scholars from the Asia-Pacific and Europe met in Seattle on the initiative of the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) on November 10-11, 1995, and agreed to cooperate in forming an international consortium of institutions. This consortium will establish a global database of specialists and ongoing research on contemporary Asia by building on the NBR project AccessAsia and other national data collection efforts.

This vision of an integrated network of institutions and a global system for tracking expertise and research will serve several long-term purposes. It will facilitate international collaboration on important projects and enhance capacity for analyzing urgent Asian-Pacific policy issues. In addition, it will make expertise and research available to a much larger, international clientele: academic institutions, policy communities, and multinational business. In sum, our vision is to form the global source of information on Asia specialists and their work.
